Summer & Heat Stroke As the weather gets hotter the higher the risk of your pet getting heat stroke.
Take immediate action if your dog shows these signs:
* Rapid panting * Bright red tongue * Red or pale gums * Thick, sticky saliva * Depression * Weakness * Dizziness * Vomiting – sometimes with blood * Diarrhea * Shock * Coma
You should immediately remove the dog from the sun and take them to a cool shaded place. Give the dog small amounts of water; ensure the dog does not gulp water or take in too much water. Never give the dog Gatorade or Powerade. Apply cool water to your pets paws and underside making sure to get the body temperature lowered slowly. Never use ice or ice water to cool your dog down. Do not immerse the dog in cold water that could cause shock and/or hypothermia if the dog is cooled down too fast. I have read conflicting reports on wrapping your dog in a towel..some vets say wrap them in a cool towel others say don’t because it causes a “sauna” effect and only heats the dog up faster…. Young puppies, elderly, overweight and black dogs are easily susceptible to heat stroke. Take care of your pet during the summer hot months.
Remember: Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency.
